Oban Distillery

Founded in 1794, the distillery is the heart of the town. Nestling beneath the steep cliff that overlooks Oban, one of Scotland’s oldest sources of Single Malt Scotch Whisky is just a short meander from the hotel. With Oban Distillery virtually next door, a five minute walk, the Whisky Vaults hotel is a perfect base for any whisky connoisseur drawn to the area. Every dram of whisky produced within the Distillery passes our front door as it makes its journey around the world.

Oban Distillery has an award-winning visitors centre that provides visitors with the opportunity to tour the facility, visit the impressive gift shop, and explore a small museum about the history of the site.

Oban Distillery Sensory and Flavour Finding Tour offers something new, fresh and unique. Witness the traditional craftmanship of whisky making up close. Learn about the processes that shape the Oban malts depth of flavour. Watch the guide draw Oban malt whisky directly from the cask and savour the taste of this unique 11-year-old cask strength Oban. Nose and taste the Oban 14-year-old Single Malt and discover hints of honey, smoke, citrus orange and sea salt. Enjoy this malt with crystallised ginger and experience a true taste sensation.

For the whisky connoisseur a two hour Exclusive Distillery Tour with one of their knowledgeable guides allows you to experience the malt whisky making process close at hand, and learn the secrets which make Oban Malt whisky taste totally unique. You will then be given exclusive access to the warehouse along with a vertical tasting in the Distillery Manager’s office. Finally, you will be presented with a beautiful whisky related gift to take home, providing a lasting memory of your trip.

McCaig’s Tower

Built in 1897 by local banker John Stuart McCaig, the aim of the tower was to provide work for local stonemasons and a lasting monument to the McCaig family.

The climb from the town centre to McCaig’s Tower is well worth the effort when faced with the spectacular views across Oban Bay to the Atlantic islands. The gardens inside the tower are well maintained and are a peaceful escape form the hustle and bustle of town life in Oban.

Dunollie Castle and Grounds

For more than 1000 years, the Clan Chiefs and Lords of Lorn ruled large areas of Argyll from Dunollie. Today, it remains the seat and ancestral home of Clan MacDougall.

The Museum, Castle and Grounds provide an exciting journey of discovery, where visitors of all ages can learn about the history of the castle, the noble MacDougall family and life on the west coast of Scotland through exciting exhibitions and displays.

Dunollie is a two minute drive from the centre of Oban, heading north following the signs for Ganavan. It is a pleasant thirty minute walk along the seafront from the town centre.
